Volkswagen Passat Alternator & Fuse Repair

Location: La Mesa, CA
Project Length: 3 Days
Cost: $980 – $1200
Client Type: Residential
Project Overview:
This week at Euro Auto Tech & Smog, we tackled a classic but often misunderstood issue with a 2012 Volkswagen Passat—a battery that wouldn’t charge. After a full inspection, we found a double failure: a bad alternator and a blown alternator fuse. These two components often go hand-in-hand, and this case was no exception.
Diagnosis & Repair:
Battery: Completely dead on arrival. We charged it and rechecked—still no output from the alternator.
Fuse: Tested and confirmed blown.
Alternator: No voltage output, even after fuse replacement.
We replaced the alternator first and then installed a new alternator fuse. The customer was offered two choices for the alternator:
– A remanufactured unit (cost-effective)
– A brand-new dealer part (higher cost, ~$500 more)
They made the smart choice for their needs by going with the remanufactured unit—restoring full charging functionality without breaking the bank.
